WAEC Faces Backlash Over WASSCE Delays and Unsafe Exam Conditions

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is under intense scrutiny following widespread reports of students across Nigeria sitting for their English Language Paper 2 examination late into the night, often under inadequate lighting conditions. In some instances, exams extended until 11:45 p.m., with students relying on torchlights and phone flashlights due to power outages.

WAEC has issued an apology, attributing the delays to measures aimed at preventing examination malpractice and ensuring the integrity of the test. The council acknowledged that logistical challenges, security concerns, and socio-cultural factors contributed to the disruptions. In a statement, WAEC expressed regret over the inconvenience caused to candidates, schools, and parents, emphasizing their commitment to upholding examination standards.

The situation has sparked outrage among parents, educators, and lawmakers. The House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Examination Bodies has summoned WAEC to appear within 24 hours to address the irregularities. Chairman Oboku Abonsizibe Oforji criticized WAEC’s absence from a scheduled hearing, highlighting the severity of the issues faced by students.

In a separate incident, an examination hall in Namnai, Taraba State, collapsed during the exam, injuring several students and teachers. This event has intensified concerns about the state of educational infrastructure in the country.

The Federal Ministry of Education has condemned the late-night examinations and inadequate conditions, labeling them as unacceptable. Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, assured the public of a thorough investigation and measures to prevent future occurrences.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders are calling for comprehensive reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of students during national examinations.
