Transport Costs in Nigeria Set to Drop as CNG Initiative Takes Effect

The cost of transportation in Nigeria is expected to decrease as part of a new initiative launched by President Bola Tinubu. Ismaeel Ahmed, the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), announced this on Wednesday.

Ahead of the official start on October 1, 2026, Ahmed noted that the number of CNG refuelling stations has grown significantly from fewer than 10 to 90 across the country. This expansion aims to support the use of Compressed Natural Gas and electric vehicles.

According to Ahmed, passengers can expect to pay up to 40% less on certain routes when using CNG buses. He mentioned that over 120,000 vehicles have already been converted to use CNG, with more conversions ongoing.

President Tinubu has directed state governments to speed up the implementation of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme. This program is designed to lower transportation costs for more Nigerians. An implementation committee has been set up, led by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State.

In addition, the President announced plans to establish 500 more CNG refuelling stations, aiming for a total of 1,000 stations nationwide. This initiative follows the removal of fuel subsidies and is part of efforts to make transportation more affordable by utilizing cheaper energy sources.
