Tinubu Pledges Revitalization of South-East Gas Infrastructure and Urgent Action on Anambra Erosion Crisis

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to addressing the pressing infrastructure challenges in Nigeria’s South-East, with a particular focus on reviving the region’s gas industry and tackling the escalating erosion crisis in Anambra State.

During a recent engagement with South-East leaders in Enugu, President Tinubu emphasized the strategic importance of the Anambra Basin, highlighting its vast untapped reserves estimated at 1 billion barrels of oil and 30 billion cubic feet of gas. He pledged to prioritize the development of this resource-rich area to stimulate economic growth and energy security in the region.

In line with this commitment, the President virtually inaugurated the Seplat Energy ANOH Gas Processing Plant in May 2024, located in the Assa community of Imo State. This facility, a joint venture between Seplat Energy and the Nigerian Gas Infrastructure Company, marks a significant step toward enhancing the nation’s gas processing capabilities.

Addressing the environmental challenges, Vice President Kashim Shettima acknowledged the severe impact of erosion in the South-East, particularly in Anambra State. He announced plans for collaborative discussions involving the federal government, the National Assembly, and South-East governors to develop sustainable solutions to the erosion menace that threatens livelihoods and infrastructure in the region.

Anambra State has been grappling with severe erosion issues, with reports indicating that approximately 30 to 40 percent of the state’s landmass is under threat. Governor Chukwuma Soludo has described the situation as a state of emergency, calling for substantial federal intervention to mitigate the environmental degradation that has displaced communities and destroyed farmlands.

Communities such as Umuabu, Obeagu, and Ahaba Oka have experienced significant losses due to abandoned or poorly executed erosion control projects, despite substantial funds being allocated for these initiatives. Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of effective intervention, highlighting the urgent need for accountability and comprehensive environmental management strategies.

President Tinubu’s renewed focus on infrastructure development and environmental remediation in the South-East signals a proactive approach to addressing the region’s longstanding challenges. As plans unfold, stakeholders and residents alike remain hopeful for tangible progress that will restore stability and foster sustainable development in the affected areas.
