Texas Executes Jamaal Howard Following Botched Tennessee Execution
A 46-year-old man named Jamaal Howard was executed by lethal injection in Texas on Wednesday. This marked the first execution in the U.S. since a botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee just a week earlier.
Howard was sentenced to death for killing a store clerk during a robbery in 2000. His execution was the 30th in the United States this year. Before his execution, Howard’s lawyers requested a delay, citing concerns raised by Pike’s case.
During his final moments, Howard expressed remorse, saying, “I’m sorry for what happened; I wish you could learn to forgive me one of these days.” He was pronounced dead at 8:03 PM local time.
The Tennessee execution attempt of Christa Pike has sparked renewed discussions about the death penalty in the country. Following the incident, Tennessee’s Governor Bill Lee paused all executions while an independent investigation takes place. The state’s prison chief has resigned, although officials maintain they followed established procedures.
Pike’s case is notable as she was the first inmate to survive after being injected with lethal doses of execution drugs. She was convicted of murdering a 19-year-old in 1995 and was set to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over 200 years.
Currently, 23 states in the U.S. have abolished the death penalty, while California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania have temporary holds on executions.
