Omoyele Sowore Seeks Delay in Cyberbullying Trial Due to Campaign Travel
The trial of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, was postponed on Thursday due to his absence from court. Sowore is facing allegations of cyberbullying.
During the hearing at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the prosecuting lawyer, Akinlolu Kehinde, noted that Sowore was not present. Sowore’s defense lawyer, T. O. Etonyeaku, explained that he was in Ekiti State for campaign activities.
Etonyeaku requested that the court delay the case so another senior lawyer could arrive to represent Sowore. However, Justice Mohammed Umar pointed out that Sowore had sent a letter directly to the court, which the prosecution had not seen.
Kehinde argued that it was not appropriate for Sowore to write to the court without informing the prosecution, as he was still represented by his lawyer. Despite this, the prosecution agreed to the adjournment to ensure fairness in the case.
The judge set a new date for the trial to continue on November 3, when they will discuss legal arguments and continue Sowore’s defense. The Department of State Services is handling the case, which stems from Sowore’s social media posts in August 2025, where he criticized President Bola Tinubu.
