Record-Breaking Feat: Tincan Customs Generates N16.4 Billion in a Single Day
The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made history by collecting a record-breaking N16.4 billion in a single day, a clear win for technological efficiency and stakeholder collaboration. The unprecedented sum was generated on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and officials are attributing the success to the command’s newly deployed digital clearing platform.
In a statement, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, hailed the achievement as a testament to the effectiveness of the Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), a modern trade facilitation tool known as “B’Odogwu.” The system, he noted, has drastically improved the ability of licensed customs agents and other port users to complete cargo clearance processes in real time, without the unnecessary delays and administrative hurdles that have long plagued port operations.
“This achievement is a strong indication of the efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness of the B’Odogwu system in streamlining port operations,” Onyeka said. He further explained that the system’s integration of all key port and customs operations onto a single digital interface has been a game-changer, enabling faster processing, more accurate valuation, and enhanced monitoring of all cargo activities.
The N16.4 billion haul is a significant leap from the command’s average daily collection and is being celebrated as a major step toward meeting the government’s aggressive revenue targets. For context, the command’s monthly target for 2024 was N94.23 billion, which translates to a daily target of around N4.23 billion. This new record shows a monumental leap in daily performance, demonstrating that the command is well on its way to surpassing its goals.
The impressive revenue collection is not just a statistical anomaly; it signals a fundamental shift in how business is conducted at the ports. The success of the B’Odogwu system at the Tin Can Island Command is expected to encourage its deployment in other commands, paving the way for a more efficient and transparent customs service across the country.
