Rampant Super Eagles Tear Mozambique Apart in 4-0 Thriller to Storm into Quarterfinals; Osimhen and Lookman Shine in Morocco
Nigeria’s Super Eagles sent a resounding message to the rest of the continent tonight, crushing Mozambique 4-0 to march into the quarterfinals of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In what was their most clinical performance of the tournament so far, the three-time African champions outclassed the Mambas from start to finish, combining tactical discipline with lethal finishing to stay on course for their fourth continental title.
The onslaught began in the 12th minute when Victor Osimhen capitalized on a defensive blunder to fire home from close range. Mozambique attempted to regroup, but their resistance was short-lived. In the 34th minute, Ademola Lookman doubled the lead with a sublime curling effort from the edge of the box, leaving the Mozambican goalkeeper stranded.
The second half was more of the same. Lookman grabbed his second of the night in the 58th minute after a brilliant solo run by Moses Simon. Despite a 3-0 lead, Nigeria refused to take their foot off the pedal. Substitute Victor Boniface added the cherry on top in the 89th minute, finishing off a crisp counter-attacking move to make it 4-0.
The Super Eagles’ defense, led by captain William Troost-Ekong, was equally impressive, keeping their third consecutive clean sheet of the tournament. The midfield trio of Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, and Frank Onyeka completely bossed the center of the park, preventing Mozambique from establishing any meaningful rhythm.
“Today we saw the true character of this team. We were patient, we were clinical, and we respected our opponents. But the job is not done. We move to the quarterfinals with our heads high and our focus even sharper.” — Super Eagles Head Coach
The victory has ignited wild celebrations among the Nigerian contingent in Casablanca and back home. As the “Eagles” soar into the final eight, they await the winner of the Cameroon vs. Mali clash—a matchup that promises to be a high-stakes encounter regardless of the opponent.
With the form they showed tonight, the Super Eagles look increasingly like the team to beat in Morocco 2026.
