President Tinubu Showers Super Falcons with National Honours, $100,000 Each for Record WAFCON Victory
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday, July 28, 2025, hosted Nigeria’s triumphant Super Falcons, lavishing them with national honours, substantial cash rewards, and residential apartments following their historic victory at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Each of the 24 squad members received the prestigious national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a cash award of $100,000 (equivalent in Naira), and a three-bedroom apartment in the government’s Renewed Hope Estate in Abuja.
The President’s grand reception at the State House in Abuja celebrated the Super Falcons’ remarkable achievement of clinching a record 10th WAFCON title on Saturday, July 26, 2025. The Nigerian women’s national football team mounted a dramatic comeback from a two-goal deficit to defeat host nation Morocco 3-2 in a thrilling final match.
During the reception, President Tinubu lauded the team’s exceptional performance and resilience. “The indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage you displayed lifted the spirit of the entire nation,” President Tinubu stated. “You have inspired millions, especially young girls, who now see proof that their dreams are valid and achievable. You inspired me too, and it’s a great thing for a nation to have assets that are hope for today, tomorrow, and thereafter.”
Beyond the players, the 11-member technical crew of the Super Falcons was also recognized, with each official receiving a cash award of $50,000 and a three-bedroom apartment in the Renewed Hope Estate. In a further show of appreciation, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) announced an additional N10 million for each player and official.
The Super Falcons arrived in Abuja earlier on Monday to a heroic welcome, with jubilant fans and top government officials greeting them at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. The team’s victory in Rabat, Morocco, was a testament to their tenacity, as they overturned a 2-0 halftime scoreline with goals from Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and a late winner by Jennifer Echegini.
Individual brilliance also shone through, with Captain Rasheedat Ajibade named the Best Player of the Tournament, Esther Okoronkwo the Woman of the Match in the final, and Chiamaka Nnadozie securing the Best Goalkeeper award. Several Nigerian players also made it into the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Team of the Tournament.
The presidential commendation and unprecedented rewards underscore the nation’s profound pride in the Super Falcons, solidifying their status as Africa’s most successful women’s national football team and inspiring a new generation of female athletes.
