Oyo Governor Questions Federal Fuel Discount Policy and Pricing Transparency

The prices of fuel in Nigeria are a major concern for many people. Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, has raised questions about the Federal Government’s fuel discount policy. He is asking the government to share its pricing details for the program.

Makinde, who is also a presidential candidate for the Allied Peoples Movement, made his comments during a town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State. He expressed frustration with the government’s lack of transparency, saying, “Just release to Nigerians your pricing template: how you arrived at your figure.” He believes that Nigerians are capable of understanding the pricing and could offer better solutions.

This discussion comes shortly after the Federal Government announced a 30-day fuel discount policy aimed at reducing fuel prices nationwide. However, this policy has faced criticism from opposition groups, who argue that it resembles a return to fuel subsidies and is politically motivated ahead of the 2027 elections.

President Bola Tinubu, who is running for a second term, implemented significant economic reforms upon taking office in 2023. These reforms included removing a major fuel subsidy and adjusting the exchange rate. While some economists support these changes, they have also led to increased living costs and hardship for many Nigerians.

Despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, Nigeria has seen fuel prices rise to about ₦1,400 (around $1.00) per litre, up from ₦830 before the recent conflicts in the Middle East. This situation continues to affect the daily lives of many citizens.
