Over 1,000 Clerics in Northern Nigeria Urge Change in President Tinubu’s Policies

More than 1,000 Islamic clerics gathered in Kano, Northern Nigeria, last week to express their discontent with President Bola Tinubu’s administration. They warned that unless he changes his economic policies, they will not support his re-election next year. The clerics pointed to rising hardship, unemployment, and insecurity as key issues affecting the country.

The meeting took place during a national conference titled “An Assessment of the State of the Nation under President Tinubu and the 2027 General Elections.” Prominent figures in attendance included respected scholars and clerics, suggesting that their message carries significant weight.

Despite the clerics’ strong stance, Tinubu’s campaign team claimed he has been performing well and has support in many northern states. However, the disconnect between the clerics’ concerns and the government’s narrative raises questions about the true state of public sentiment.

In response to the clerics’ resolution, the Federal Government announced a petrol price discount, which some see as an attempt to address their grievances. The Minister of Finance described this move as a way to help public transporters, but it remains unclear if this will truly alleviate the suffering faced by many Nigerians.

As the political landscape continues to shift, the clerics’ call for change highlights the growing frustration among citizens. With the upcoming elections, it remains to be seen how these dynamics will influence the political climate in Nigeria.
