Construction of Ogun Deep Sea Port Set to Start in November

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has announced that construction of the Gateway Deep Sea Port will begin in November. The port, along with the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, is expected to cost over $7 billion and will be located in the Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

Abiodun made this announcement while speaking to members of the All Progressives Congress in Ijebu East and Ijebu North. This follows a recent agreement signed with DP World MEA FZE in Paris, which was attended by President Bola Tinubu.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the port is scheduled for November, with construction expected to start immediately afterward. The governor stated that the port should be nearly completed within two and a half years.

According to Abiodun, this project is crucial for unlocking Ogun State’s maritime and economic potential. He noted that the port has been in planning for over three decades but has not been built until now. The governor emphasized that good governance involves vision and the ability to implement plans.

He expressed confidence that Ogun State will become a major maritime hub in Africa, stating that the largest ships will first dock at Ogun Waterside when they come to the continent.

Abiodun also thanked President Tinubu for his support, which includes assurances of federal government backing for the project. He mentioned other federal infrastructure projects, such as road improvements, that will enhance access to the area.

Additionally, the governor highlighted the natural resources in the region, including significant deposits of bitumen and crude oil, which his administration plans to develop for economic growth.
