Nigerian Bar Association Warns of Anarchy from Ongoing Attacks in Plateau State

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned the ongoing attacks on citizens in Plateau State, warning that these incidents could lead to chaos. The association highlighted that these attacks happen daily, particularly in the Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, and Bokkos Local Government Areas, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.

During a press briefing in Jos, NBA officials expressed frustration over the lack of action from government leaders to protect the people. The statement was signed by several branch chairpersons, who emphasized that the violence undermines trust in the government and the social contract between citizens and their leaders.

Despite a curfew intended to keep people safe, the NBA noted that attackers continued their assaults, showing a disregard for the law. They pointed out that community members, who were encouraged to defend themselves, have also become targets for violence. For instance, vigilantes in Kikyau village were killed while on duty during curfew hours.

The NBA described the situation as an invitation to total anarchy, highlighting a troubling pattern of violence and a lack of accountability for the perpetrators. They warned that when violence goes unpunished, it sends a message that human life is not valued.

Many communities in Plateau State have been displaced over the years, with their lands taken over by attackers. While the NBA acknowledged the federal government’s condolences following recent attacks, they urged all levels of government to prioritize the protection of lives and property.
