Nigerian Army Enhances Security for Youth Corps Members in Rivers State
The Nigerian Army has committed to boosting security for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members traveling to Rivers State for their orientation exercises. Major General Everest Okoro, the General Officer Commanding of the 6 Division, made this promise during a visit from an NYSC delegation to the division’s headquarters in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
Okoro emphasized the importance of the NYSC scheme, describing it as a national asset that fosters unity and benefits all Nigerians. He noted that the program serves as a vital platform for bringing together young people from various backgrounds, promoting national cohesion.
Despite the positive aspects of the NYSC, Okoro raised concerns about the security risks that corps members face while traveling to their primary assignments across the country. He assured that the army would continue to strengthen security measures to address these threats, especially during the corps members’ arrival in Rivers for their orientation.
He also praised the NYSC and its members for their roles in nation-building and cultural integration among different ethnic groups. Okoro acknowledged Mr. Moses Oleghe, the Rivers NYSC Coordinator, for his collaboration with the army to enhance the NYSC scheme.
Earlier, Oleghe expressed gratitude to the GOC for his support of the NYSC, highlighting his dedication despite being newly posted to the state. He mentioned that the visit aimed to reinforce the relationship between the NYSC and the 6 Division and urged Okoro to maintain an open-door policy to facilitate ongoing cooperation. Oleghe believes that a stronger partnership would significantly improve the safety and well-being of corps members serving in Rivers.
