Nigeria Loses ‘Patriot, Father,’ Says Senator Ndume as He Mourns Buhari

Senator Ali Ndume has expressed profound shock and sadness over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the late leader as a “true patriot” and “a father” whose indelible legacy will forever be etched in Nigeria’s political history. Buhari died at the age of 82 in London on Sunday.

In a heartfelt tribute issued in Abuja, the lawmaker representing Borno South Senatorial District recalled a deep personal relationship with the former president, characterized by mutual respect, sincerity, and cultural familiarity.

“This evening, I received with profound shock the news of the passing of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR),” Senator Ndume stated. “The late President was a man I held in the highest regard — not merely as a statesman, but as a father figure and mentor whose simplicity, integrity, and commitment to national service deeply inspired me.”

Ndume shared a glimpse into their close bond, noting, “Our bond was one built on mutual respect, sincerity, and fond familiarity. Those who witnessed our interactions often mistook me for a Kanuri man, as we frequently exchanged playful banter drawn from Fulani-Kanuri cultural traditions.”

The senator further emphasized the personal impact of Buhari’s mentorship. “In President Buhari, I have lost not just a leader, but a personal pillar, a man who believed in my potential and encouraged me at critical points in my journey,” he said. He fondly remembered his last visit to the former president in Daura, Katsina State, cherishing the warmth, humour, and wise counsel shared during that encounter. “His warmth, humour, and wise counsel remain etched in my memory,” Ndume added.
