Nigeria Urges Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at UN Meeting

Nigeria has called for the complete elimination of atomic weapons, stating that humanity cannot rely on such destructive weapons for safety. This statement was made by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, during a UN meeting on nuclear disarmament in New York.

The meeting took place on Tuesday, coinciding with the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, as part of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly. Jimoh emphasized that Nigeria believes the only way to ensure nuclear weapons are not used is to eliminate them entirely.

He pointed out that many nuclear warheads still exist and that countries with nuclear weapons are continuing to modernize their arsenals. This is happening amid increasing geopolitical tensions and challenges to global arms control.

Jimoh reiterated that Nigeria does not have nuclear weapons and has never sought to develop them. He stated, “Our security does not depend on nuclear weapons.” He stressed that true global security should be based on dialogue, international law, and cooperation among nations.

The Nigerian government, under President Bola Tinubu, is committed to international efforts aimed at creating a world free of nuclear weapons.
