Makinde Vows PDP Will Surprise Everyone in 2027 Despite Recent Defections to APC

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is sending a clear warning to his political rivals: don’t write the funeral songs for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) just yet.

Speaking on the heels of recent political realignments that saw several opposition governors jump ship to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Makinde remains defiant. He told reporters this week that while the party may be facing a rough patch with internal defections, it is quietly preparing to “shock” its critics when the 2027 elections finally arrive.

“Many people are looking at the movements today and thinking the PDP is over,” Makinde remarked during a recent briefing. “They are in for a very big surprise. Politics is about timing and strategy, and we are working on a comeback that will leave our detractors speechless.”

The Governor, who has recently been seen at the Presidential Villa for official state business, was quick to clarify that his relationship with the President doesn’t mean he’s trading his party’s colors. He argued that the survival of Nigeria’s democracy depends on having a strong second voice, and he is committed to making sure the PDP remains that voice. He specifically hit out at the idea of Nigeria becoming a “one-party state,” calling it a danger to the progress of the nation.

While acknowledging the exit of colleagues like Plateau State’s Caleb Mutfwang, Makinde suggested that the PDP is using this period to “sieve the wheat from the chaff.” He believes that by the time the 2027 campaign season kicks off, the party will have a more focused and united front, built on the support of Nigerians who are looking for a fresh alternative to the status quo.

For now, Makinde seems to be positioning himself as the “last man standing” in the opposition’s corner, betting on a massive turnaround that he promises will catch the entire country off guard.
