“Lookman is Here!” Nigerian Star Bags Goal and Assist on Dream Atlético Debut as Simeone’s Men Crush Betis 5–0

The Ademola Lookman era at Atlético Madrid has begun with a bang. Just days after completing his high-profile €40 million move from Atalanta, the 2024 African Player of the Year delivered a masterclass on Thursday night, powering his new club into the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a clinical 5–0 victory over Real Betis.

Thrown straight into the starting lineup by Diego Simeone, Lookman wasted no time proving why he was the winter window’s most sought-after signature. After David Hancko and Giuliano Simeone put the visitors 2–0 up, Lookman took center stage in the 37th minute. Receiving a slick pass from Pablo Barrios on a counter-attack, the Nigerian forward danced past two Betis defenders before slotting a scuffed but precise shot into the bottom corner.

But the 28-year-old wasn’t finished. In the second half, Lookman turned creator, using his explosive pace to break down the flank before teeing up club legend Antoine Griezmann, who rifled home the fourth goal of the night.

“You could immediately notice his power in the final third,” a beaming Diego Simeone said after the match. “He joined the group very quickly and formed a partnership with Griezmann that we expect will carry us through the rest of the season.”

Lookman’s debut is statistically historic, making him the first Rojiblanco starter in over a decade to record both a goal and an assist in their first game. His arrival appears to be the “shot in the arm” Atlético needed, as they have struggled for consistency in front of goal throughout the 2025–26 campaign.

As Atlético heads into the semi-final draw on Friday, the Madrid faithful are already dreaming of a trophy. If Lookman’s first 90 minutes are anything to go by, the “State of Harmony” has officially shifted from Bergamo to the Metropolitano.
