Kidnappers of Ex-Military Spokesman General Rabe Abubakar Release Chilling Video; Demand High-Stakes Swap to Save Couple
The security architecture of the North-West has been thrown into an intensive tactical dilemma after the armed bandit syndicate holding retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, and his wife released a chilling proof-of-life video demanding a prisoner swap and the restitution of hundreds of confiscated livestock in exchange for their release.
The high-stakes video, which began circulating across digital portals on Saturday, June 6, 2026, offers the first direct visual confirmation of the couple’s welfare since their violent abduction. The retired general, who served as the primary communication shield for the Armed Forces of Nigeria during critical phases of the counter-insurgency campaigns, was intercepted alongside his wife when gunmen ambushed their vehicle along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli Road near Zakin Baure village in the Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State. While the attackers spared the couple, they opened heavy fire on their vehicle, leaving their driver with severe gunshot injuries.
Unzipping the captors’ precise conditions during the four-minute, two-second clip, General Abubakar’s wife, speaking in Hausa, appealed directly to Katsina State Governor, Dr. Dikko Umar Radda, and regional traditional rulers to intervene. Rather than slapping a multi-million naira cash ransom on the high-profile hostages, the armed ring, reportedly operating under the field command of a notorious regional bandit kingpin, Kachallah Muhammad, has focused entirely on recovering lost human and livestock assets.
Specifically, the syndicate is demanding the immediate technical release of three individuals identified as Aminu, Sani, and Nasiru, whom they described as their “children.” According to the family’s statement, two of the operatives were dragged into custody by state security forces in Jikamshi, while the third was apprehended during a special intelligence sweep in Kano State.
Closely coupled with the prisoner demand is an unyielding call for the restitution of a massive herd of cattle and sheep.
“They are appealing for the release of their people, as well as the return of their property,” the general’s wife pleaded in the viral video text. “Their cattle and sheep were also seized by security operatives. Three hundred cows were taken from them. We are openly appealing and begging, for God’s sake, that anyone who has a role in this matter, anyone with the authority to act, and whom God has entrusted with leadership in Katsina State, should please assist us and intervene so that these people can be freed.”
Appearing briefly in the footage wearing a blue kaftan and a black cap, Major General Abubakar (retd.) did not dispute the gang’s terms, choosing instead to deliver a strategic advisory manual aimed at halting any forceful military rescue scripts that could jeopardize their lives. The retired general indicated that the leaders of the cell had expressed an unexpected willingness to drop their weapons and embrace a localized dialogue framework if the state high command addresses their grievances.
“The abductors have expressed a genuine interest in peace and are willing to engage in dialogue to bring about lasting peaceful coexistence in this region,” the general stated, urging administrative stakeholders across the Matazu, Musawa, Kankia, Kurfi, and Dutsin-Ma local axis to explore a negotiated settlement.
The development landing on Governor Radda’s desk presents a complex security problem. While the Katsina State Police Command and the military high command have maintained a defensive silence regarding the video, intelligence analysts note that trading detained suspects and returning 300 cows sets a dangerous precedent that could encourage syndicates to target more retired senior military officers as bargaining chips.
With public anxiety mounting over the vulnerability of veteran defense administrators across the 2026 calendar, tactical squads are under pressure to deploy advanced tracking data to locate Muhammad’s deep-forest trenches before the state is forced to compromise its legal shield to rescue the former defense spokesman.
