Kano State Distributes Learning Materials to Over 5,000 Students

The Kano State Government has started distributing teaching and learning materials to 5,022 students enrolled in the Accelerated Basic Education Programme (ABEP). This initiative covers three local government areas in the state.

The distribution event was led by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Abubakar Makoda. It received support from Plan International Nigeria and funding from the European Union. Each student will receive a package that includes a school bag, exercise books, sandals, and a water bottle.

During the event, Makoda praised Plan International Nigeria and its partners for their ongoing support in improving access to education for children and young people who have missed out on formal schooling. He emphasized that providing these materials is part of the government’s effort to create a better learning environment for vulnerable students.

Makoda reiterated the government’s promise to ensure that every child has access to education. He highlighted the importance of partnerships with development organizations to tackle educational challenges and expand opportunities for children in the state. He also encouraged students to take good care of the materials and use them wisely.

Alhassan Hamza Hussain, the State Project Advocacy Officer for Plan International, noted that the materials would help meet the basic needs of the students and promote their active participation in learning. He thanked the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders for their support in making the program successful.

The beneficiaries are from selected learning centers in Gwale, Kumbotso, and Nasarawa Local Government Areas. Kumbotso has the largest group with around 2,600 learners, followed by Gwale with about 1,200 and Nasarawa with around 1,100 students. The ABEP aims to provide fast-tracked learning for children and young people who have missed out on formal education, helping them gain essential knowledge and skills.
