Kano State Boosts Electricity Supply with Four New Substations

The Federal Government has opened four new transmission substations in Kano State, which will add 544 megawatts of capacity to improve electricity supply for homes, businesses, and industries. This project was carried out by the Transmission Company of Nigeria together with the Kano State Government.

The new substations are located in Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata, and Dan-Agundi. According to a statement from the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Adeola Labzy, these improvements are expected to relieve pressure on existing substations and better meet the area’s electricity needs.

At the Walalambe substation, 80 megawatts of capacity will be provided through two transformers, which will serve various areas including the Tokarawa Industrial Area and Maiduguri Road. Kumbotso will benefit from a significant upgrade with 300 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of capacity, while Dakata and Dan-Agundi will each receive an additional 100 MVA transformer.

Notably, the Lee Group, a major industrial player, has been reconnected to the national grid after being off-grid for over 30 years. The upgrades at Dan-Agundi are especially important following a fire that had previously damaged the substation, restoring its ability to serve local communities.

The Ministry of Power emphasized that these projects will enhance electricity infrastructure, potentially boosting employment and improving living conditions in the region. This initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to strengthen the power sector as a key driver of national development.

However, it is important to note that simply increasing transmission capacity does not guarantee a rise in electricity supply to consumers. Actual electricity delivery will also depend on the availability of power generation and the capacity of distribution networks.
