Kano Assembly Approves State Police Bill and Cuts Budget by ₦266 Billion

The Kano State House of Assembly has approved a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution, which will allow for the creation of a state police force in Nigeria. This decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, led by Speaker Rt. Hon. Isma’il Falgore.

Alongside the police bill, the Assembly also approved a revised supplementary budget for 2026, cutting the proposed spending from about ₦1.478 trillion to roughly ₦1.211 trillion. This reduction of about ₦266 billion was made after lawmakers reviewed the state’s financial needs.

The proposed constitutional amendment aims to give state governments the legal authority to set up and manage their own police services. This comes as discussions continue nationwide about decentralizing policing to better address Nigeria’s ongoing security issues.

Lawmakers carefully examined all 26 sections of the police bill before giving their approval. The changes are part of a larger effort to revise the constitution and improve how security is managed in the country.

In addition to the bills, the Assembly confirmed six nominees for commissioner positions in the state executive council, as recommended by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The confirmed nominees include Air Commodore Salisu Yusha’u (rtd.) and Professor Sani Lawan, among others.
