Itsekiri Youths Demand Clarity on Warri Electoral Boundaries from INEC
The Ugbarajo Itsekiri Youths (UIY) are calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to clarify the legal and geographical basis for the electoral units and ward boundaries it recently published for Warri Federal Constituency in Delta State.
UIY claims that the new electoral structure could threaten community identity and representation, especially amid allegations of boundary manipulation. The group’s spokesperson, Gbubemi Ejesi, emphasized that these developments pose a risk to electoral fairness and the political rights of indigenous communities.
Concerns have been raised about the inclusion of certain locations in the electoral data, which UIY argues are historically significant to the Itsekiri people. They are particularly troubled by claims that some areas have been assigned to Ijaw interests, which UIY believes could undermine the political representation of the Itsekiri community.
UIY has strongly condemned the alleged irregularities in the delineation process and is demanding that INEC provide detailed maps, coordinates, and administrative records to support its claims. The group insists that any electoral ward must be backed by clear geographical and legal evidence.
Additionally, UIY is worried about reports of inaccuracies in the geographical data used by INEC, which could affect the integrity of the electoral structure. They are urging the commission to correct any errors and ensure that the electoral arrangements comply with relevant laws and judicial decisions.
UIY has vowed to continue advocating for the rights of the Itsekiri people and is prepared to challenge any electoral decisions that they believe are unjust or lack proper evidence.
