Hakeem Baba-Ahmed Warns APC That Defections Alone Won’t Win 2027 Elections

As the political atmosphere in Nigeria begins to heat up for the 2027 general elections, a prominent political voice and former presidential aide, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has told the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop relying on defectors to win.

Speaking in a fresh assessment of the country’s political landscape in January 2026, Baba-Ahmed pointed out that the current trend of opposition members rushing to join the APC will not provide the “shield” the party expects. He noted that while the ruling party is busy celebrating the arrival of new members from the PDP and Labour Party, the average Nigerian is more concerned about the cost of living and the effectiveness of government policies.

“The idea that you can just gather every big politician into one room and call it a victory is a dangerous mistake,” Baba-Ahmed warned. He explained that elections are ultimately decided by the millions of voters who are currently feeling the pinch of economic reforms. According to him, the sheer volume of “party jumping” seen in recent months is a sign of desperation among the political elite, not a sign of the party’s strength among the masses.

He further predicted that if the APC does not prioritize governance over political maneuvering, they will face a historic challenge in 2027. He stated that the next election will likely be a referendum on the party’s performance, where even a “mega-party” of defectors would not be able to stop the will of an unsatisfied electorate.

Baba-Ahmed urged the party leadership to focus on delivering tangible results for the common man rather than focusing on the number of “heavyweights” they can bring into their fold. He concluded that in the end, it is the satisfaction of the 200 million Nigerians that will determine who stays in power, not the secret deals made by politicians switching sides.
