Ghana Seeks Membership in BRICS Economic Group
Ghana’s cabinet has approved a plan to formally apply for membership in the BRICS group, according to Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. He made this announcement during a visit from India’s External Affairs Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
Ablakwa stated that Ghana has already requested India’s support for its application. He described this move as a way to diversify the country’s economic and diplomatic relationships.
The BRICS group, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, has grown to include South Africa and other nations like Ethiopia, Iran, and Indonesia. The group aims to strengthen ties among emerging economies, particularly in the global south.
“Joining India in BRICS will give us economic options, will diversify our base and our partnerships, and will also allow us to have more cooperation within the global south framework,” Ablakwa said.
Jaishankar expressed India’s support for Ghana’s aspirations but noted that the decision for membership ultimately rests with the entire BRICS group. Other current members include Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
