CDS Orders Troops to Stay Neutral and Respect Citizens’ Rights Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s military high command has drawn a firm line in the sand ahead of the 2027 general elections, issuing a clear warning to all officers and soldiers to remain strictly neutral and uphold fundamental human rights while discharging their duties.

The directive, issued by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), comes as political activities and early campaign maneuvers begin gaining momentum across the country. Addressing commanders and personnel across various formations, the military chief made it clear that the Armed Forces will not tolerate any form of political partisanship, bias, or interference in democratic processes.

The defense leadership emphasized that the role of the armed forces during electoral cycles is purely supportive—working alongside the Nigeria Police Force and civil security agencies to maintain order and prevent violence, rather than dictating or influencing election outcomes.

“The military has no political party, nor does it support any candidate,” the Chief of Defence Staff declared. “Our allegiance is strictly to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the sovereign people of this nation. Any officer or soldier who engages in political activity, compromises their duty, or violates the rights of citizens will be dealt with decisively under military law.”

In addition to enforcing neutrality, the defense chief placed heavy emphasis on human rights compliance. Troops deployed for election duties were instructed to treat voters, election officials, and observers with utmost respect, warning that ballot-snatching, voter harassment, or excessive force by security personnel will be treated as grave criminal offenses.

Security analysts have welcomed the early warning from the defense headquarters, noting that a firm stance on non-partisanship helps build public trust in the electoral system and deters politicians who might seek to leverage security agencies for personal advantage.

With the directive now active across all military divisions and command structures, the defense high command reassured Nigerians that the armed forces remain fully prepared to safeguard national peace and uphold democratic stability throughout the electoral cycle.
