Bill Gates Warns Unregulated AI Could Lead to More Cyberattacks
Bill Gates has raised concerns about the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence (AI), predicting a rise in AI-driven cyberattacks over the next year. In an interview with ABC News, the Microsoft co-founder emphasized that while the risk of AI becoming uncontrollable is a long-term issue, the immediate threat comes from malicious individuals using current AI systems without necessary protections.
Gates stated, “The front that we’ll probably see most dramatically in the next year is cyberattacks.” He explained that the real danger lies in bad actors exploiting AI technology, particularly when safeguards are removed. He called for stricter regulations to prevent these individuals from using AI for harmful purposes, such as bioterrorism and cyberattacks.
He highlighted that currently, there are few restrictions on removing safety measures from AI systems. Gates warned that this lack of oversight could lead to significant negative consequences in the cyber realm over the next year.
This warning aligns with Gates’ previous comments from August, where he expressed concern about the world being unprepared for the challenges posed by AI, particularly regarding job security. He joins other tech leaders in voicing alarm over the potential threats of this emerging technology.
During the interview, Gates also criticized the idea that self-regulation by AI companies is enough to ensure safety. He stated, “It’s clear we’re not doing enough,” emphasizing that relying solely on companies to manage such a powerful technology is inadequate.
