Akpabio Urges Immediate National Census to Resolve Population Data Discrepancies
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to conduct a national population census, highlighting that the absence of accurate demographic data hampers effective national planning and development.
During a meeting with the National Population Commission (NPC) in Abuja, Akpabio expressed concern over the conflicting population figures circulating both domestically and internationally. He noted that estimates of Nigeria’s population vary widely, ranging from 220 million to over 300 million, leading to confusion and misrepresentation.
“It’s a national embarrassment that even our representatives abroad are uncertain about our actual population figures,” Akpabio stated. “Without accurate data, we cannot effectively plan for education, healthcare, infrastructure, or other essential services.”
He stressed that the last census was conducted in 2006, making a new count long overdue. Akpabio assured the NPC of the National Assembly’s full support in facilitating the necessary legislative backing and resources to ensure the successful execution of the census.
NPC Chairman Nasir Isa Kwarra, who led the delegation, reiterated the Commission’s readiness to carry out a comprehensive and credible census. He emphasized that accurate population data is crucial for policy formulation, resource allocation, and tracking national development.
The proposed census aims to provide reliable demographic information that will aid in addressing the nation’s developmental challenges and promote sustainable growth.
