Safety First: Lagos State Government Sensitises Traders, Park Operators on Fire Prevention
In a significant move to avert potential fire disasters, the Lagos State Government has flagged off a massive fire safety sensitization campaign targeting traders in markets and operators of motor parks across the state. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, is a direct response to the recurring fire outbreaks that have resulted in devastating losses for businesses and individuals.
During a press conference held in Alausa, Ikeja, the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Olugbenga Oyerinde, underscored the urgency of the campaign. He referenced the recent International Fire Safety Week and noted the importance of proactive measures. “We cannot overlook the unfortunate series of fire outbreaks that have occurred in our markets… which led to devastating losses for traders and the state at large,” Oyerinde stated. The campaign, which has already visited locations like the Ketu market and Arena Market in Oshodi, focuses on educating traders on the critical aspects of fire prevention.
Officials on the ground are emphasizing practical measures to prevent infernos. Traders are being warned against common but dangerous practices such as the sale of petroleum products in markets, leaving electrical appliances plugged in overnight, and using cooking gas within their stalls. The campaign also includes demonstrations on how to use basic fire safety equipment like extinguishers, a skill the government believes could save lives and property in the crucial first minutes of an outbreak.
The state government has a clear goal: to drastically reduce fire incidents, particularly in high-risk areas like markets and motor parks. According to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Sesan Ogundeko, the state is hoping to achieve at least a 50% reduction in fire incidents this year. This ambitious target is a departure from previous strategies and underscores a new commitment to not just fighting fires but preventing them from starting in the first place.
For the traders and park operators, the message is clear: fire safety is a collective responsibility. Market leaders who spoke at the events expressed their support for the government’s initiative, noting that the campaigns serve as a vital reminder to their members. The success of this program hinges on the cooperation of every individual, as the government works to create a safer and more resilient Lagos for everyone.
