Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Dies at 91
The revered Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of a remarkable 65-year reign. The revered monarch, who was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving traditional rulers, joined his ancestors today, Sunday, July 13, 2025.
The sad news was officially confirmed by the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, in a statement issued from Abeokuta, the state capital. Governor Abiodun expressed profound sadness at the monarch’s demise, noting that Oba Adetona’s passing came on the same day Nigeria was thrown into mourning by the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the revered Awujale of Ijebuland,” Governor Abiodun stated. “Oba Adetona joined his ancestors today, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that has significantly shaped Ijebuland, Ogun State and Nigeria in general.”
Oba Adetona ascended the ancient throne of Ijebuland on April 2, 1960, just months before Nigeria gained independence. Throughout his illustrious 65-year reign, he earned widespread respect for his astute leadership, foresight, and unwavering commitment to the development and cultural preservation of Ijebuland. He was widely regarded as a beacon of unity and a progressive force within the traditional institution.
The Governor further lauded Oba Adetona as a “remarkable royal father” who spearheaded significant strides in education, healthcare, and economic growth within his domain. His wisdom, courage, and dedication to the welfare of his people cemented his place as one of Nigeria’s most influential monarchs, recognized globally for advocating for constitutional roles for traditional rulers and serving as a strong voice during both military regimes and democratic transitions. He was also a recipient of the second-highest national honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), conferred by President Bola Tinubu.
As Ijebuland and indeed Nigeria mourn the loss of this iconic figure, tributes have begun pouring in, celebrating a life dedicated to service, peace, and development. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Ijebu Traditional Council and the Royal Family in due course.
