One Killed, Five Injured as IED Explodes in Imo Market

A market woman was killed and five other individuals sustained injuries on Tuesday when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), believed to be a landmine, detonated at the bustling Eke Ubaheze Market Square in Awo-Idemili, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State. The tragic incident occurred at approximately 2:40 pm while trading activities were in full swing.

Confirming the incident, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, identified the deceased as Mrs. Ngozi Umeh, a resident of Ubaheze village, who reportedly stepped on the planted explosive. While police confirmed one fatality and five injured persons who are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, local residents indicated that two people died from the explosion.

Police preliminary investigations suggest that the landmine was planted by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). The area has, in recent times, been a flashpoint for clashes between security forces and non-state armed actors.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting concerns over the safety of public spaces in the region. Security agencies have commenced a full investigation into the explosion, with efforts underway to apprehend those responsible and prevent further occurrences. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
