Gunmen Attack Agunechemba Security Facility in Anambra, Kill One Operative

In the early hours of Thursday, June 5, unidentified gunmen launched a coordinated assault on the Agunechemba security facility in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack resulted in the death of one vigilante operative and left several others injured.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants overwhelmed the operatives stationed at the facility, setting five operational vehicles ablaze and partially burning the security office. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and the police have initiated an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.

Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and urged the public to provide any information that could aid the investigation. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the attack and emphasized the need for community support to bring the perpetrators to justice. A police-led joint security force has taken over the scene and is working to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

This incident marks the second attack on a vigilante facility in Anambra State within a span of five weeks. In late April, gunmen attacked a vigilante office in Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area, resulting in one fatality. The Nigerian government has repeatedly accused the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of being responsible for such attacks, but the group has consistently denied involvement.

The resurgence of attacks on security facilities in the region underscores the need for enhanced security measures and community cooperation to combat rising insecurity in Anambra State and the broader South-east region.
