Lawyer Calls for Independent Oversight on Allocation of Emefiele’s 753 Forfeited Duplexes

Prominent human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi has urged the Federal Government to establish an independent oversight committee to supervise the allocation and sale of the 753 duplexes recently forfeited by former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele. This call comes amid concerns about potential mismanagement and lack of transparency in the disposal of the properties.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had secured a final forfeiture order for the estate, located in the Lokogoma District of Abuja, following investigations that linked the properties to proceeds of unlawful activities. The EFCC has since handed over the estate to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, which plans to sell the units through a transparent and competitive process, including nationwide advertisements and the use of the Renewed Hope Portal for expressions of interest.

Olajengbesi expressed concerns that, without proper oversight, the allocation process could be compromised by political interference and favoritism. He emphasized the need for an independent committee comprising representatives from civil society, anti-corruption agencies, and other stakeholders to ensure that the process is conducted transparently and equitably.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has assured the public of its commitment to transparency, stating that the housing units will be offered for sale through a transparent and competitive process, widely advertised and managed via the Renewed Hope Portal.

The forfeiture and planned sale of the 753 duplexes mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against corruption. However, as the government moves forward with the allocation process, stakeholders like Olajengbesi stress the importance of maintaining transparency and accountability to ensure that the properties serve the public interest and contribute to national development.
