A former gubernatorial aspirant in Kwara State, Engineer Sunday Adebayo Babalola, has called upon President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address the escalating challenges of poverty and food insecurity in Nigeria.
In a conversation with journalists in Lagos on Wednesday, Babalola urged President Tinubu to implement effective strategies to tackle unemployment, the devaluation of the naira, high inflation, and the pervasive insecurity of lives and property across the nation.
He emphasized the importance of the President not succumbing to sycophants who might provide him with distorted and overly positive reports, detached from the harsh realities faced by many Nigerians experiencing severe poverty and heightened insecurity.
Babalola, a former Deputy Director of the now-defunct Department of Petroleum Resources, advised the President to foster a conducive environment for businesses to flourish.
He urged the President to seek out independent voices and genuinely concerned individuals to gain insights into the true state of affairs, emphasizing the need to connect with the masses directly. Babalola acknowledged the challenges faced by the President, including bold decisions like canceling fuel subsidies, but stressed the imperative of addressing the root causes of suffering.
Babalola proposed that the government should focus on creating a business-friendly environment, establishing accessible funds for genuine loan seekers at reasonable interest rates, and working towards the appreciation of the Naira. He underscored the significance of addressing the forex situation, expressing optimism about the Port Harcourt refinery’s impending operation and the expected commissioning of the Dangote Refinery.
In conclusion, Babalola highlighted the urgency of creating an enabling environment for business, arguing that such measures would not only alleviate unemployment but also contribute to reducing the alarming number of out-of-school children, fostering a safer and more secure society.
