President Bola Tinubu successfully orchestrated a reunion among three of his successors as governors of Lagos State, namely Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Tinubu’s tenure as governor of Lagos State spanned from 1999 to 2007. After his term, he handed over the reins to Babatunde Fashola, who served as governor for the following eight years. Subsequently, Fashola passed on the responsibility to Akinwunmi Ambode.
However, a strained relationship emerged between Tinubu and Ambode, resulting in Ambode’s defeat in the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in 2018. During the heated primary election, Ambode openly criticized Tinubu and his successor, Sanwo-Olu.
Recently, a process of reconciliation began when Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the current governor of Lagos State, visited Tinubu to celebrate his 60th birthday. Sanwo-Olu commended Ambode for his dedicated service to Lagos State as both a governor and a civil servant.
In a further step towards reconciliation, Tinubu, Fashola, and Ambode were seen together at a welcome-back party organized by Governor Sanwo-Olu to honor the president. This gathering brought together four generations of leaders, including three former governors and the incumbent governor, who all hail from Lagos State.
Gboyega Akosile, the media aide to Governor Sanwo-Olu, expressed his delight about the meeting in a tweet that read: “Four Generations! Three former governors, the incumbent governor, and a president—all from Lagos. God bless Lagos State. @officialABAT @tundefashola @AkinwunmiAmbode @jidesanwoolu.”
