Nigeria’s Bamidele Salam Becomes First Secretary-General of AFROPAC
Bamidele Salam, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to hold an elective position in the African Organisation of Public Accounts Committees (AFROPAC). He was elected Secretary-General during the organization’s 6th Annual General Meeting and Conference in Accra, Ghana, on November 4, 2026.
Salam represents the Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore, and Ejigbo Federal Constituency in Osun State. His election was supported by delegates from various African countries. After his election, Salam thanked his colleagues for their trust in Nigeria, viewing his new role as a recognition of Nigeria’s efforts to enhance accountability in public finances.
He also expressed gratitude to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, for his support, which he said helped the Public Accounts Committee fulfill its duties effectively. Salam acknowledged the contributions of other Nigerian delegates who played a role in the conference, including Hon. Jeremiah Umaru, Hon. Missau Aliyu Bappa, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, and Mr. Abiodun Delupe.
In his new role, Salam aims to strengthen AFROPAC’s mission over the next four years, focusing on improving oversight of public finances, fostering collaboration among Public Accounts Committees, and ensuring that audit recommendations are implemented effectively across Africa. He emphasized the need for better cooperation among these institutions to manage public resources wisely for the benefit of citizens.
The newly elected leadership of AFROPAC includes representatives from Malawi, Ghana, Chad, Eswatini, and Kenya, alongside Salam from Nigeria. His election is seen as a significant step in Nigeria’s involvement with African parliamentary accountability efforts and an opportunity to promote transparency and responsible financial management across the continent.
