Nigeria’s Presidency Calls for Global Action Against AI Misinformation Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Presidency is urging global action to address the misuse of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in political communication. This warning comes as the country prepares for its general elections in 2027. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, spoke about the issue on Thursday in Beijing, China, during a presentation at the 7th World Media Summit.

Onanuga highlighted the dangers of AI-generated content, such as videos and images, which can distort electoral processes and undermine public trust. He noted that social media platforms like X, Facebook, and TikTok are flooded with AI-created material aimed at influencing voters and advancing political agendas.

As political campaigns ramp up for the upcoming elections, Onanuga pointed out that AI is being used by politicians in various ways. Some use it to spread false information, while others employ it for satire or to showcase their achievements. He stressed the need for responsibility among political figures, media outlets, and the public when it comes to verifying information before sharing it.

While acknowledging the risks of AI, Onanuga also recognized its positive contributions to fields like medicine and technology. He emphasized that AI is now a part of daily life, enhancing safety in vehicles and improving navigation.

Onanuga expressed hope that the global community is beginning to take the issue of AI regulation seriously, with calls for measures from scientists and governments, including the United Nations. He urged for swift action to create safeguards against the potential harms of unchecked AI, warning that inaction could lead to serious consequences for society.
