House of Representatives Calls for Urgent Repairs on Benin-Okene Highway
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to quickly repair the Agbede and Okpella sections of the Benin-Okene Federal Highway in Edo State. They highlighted the poor condition of the road and the difficulties it has caused for drivers and local residents.
This request came after a motion was presented by Mr. Anamero Dekeri, a representative from Edo State. He pointed out that the road’s condition has worsened, making travel dangerous and unpredictable for everyone who uses it, including commercial drivers and regular commuters.
According to Dekeri, the bad sections of the highway have led to long delays, turning what should be short trips into hours or even days of travel. This situation has caused exhaustion, wasted time, and higher transportation costs for many road users.
He also raised concerns about the impact on local communities, mentioning that dust, noise, and traffic jams have disrupted daily life and affected public health. Some residents have even had to leave their homes for safer areas due to the road’s condition.
The Benin-Okene Federal Highway is a key route that connects the southern and northern parts of Nigeria. Its decline is seen as a serious issue for both the economy and public safety. The highway is part of a larger network that helps transport people and goods across states.
In response to these issues, the House of Representatives has called for a state of emergency to be declared on the highway sections in question. They want the Federal Ministry of Works to quickly mobilize contractors and provide funding for repairs. Additionally, they are asking for safe alternative routes for residents affected by the road’s failure.
The lawmakers emphasized that immediate action is essential to restore the highway, protect lives, and ease the burden on local communities.
