Trump Offers Visa to Ghanaian Mother After Teen’s Killing in New York
U.S. President Donald Trump has agreed to help the mother of Javits Frimpong, a 15-year-old boy who was killed in New York City while walking to school. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced this development on Saturday as Ghana called for justice for Frimpong, whose death has deeply affected the Bronx community.
Frimpong was shot in the abdomen in the morning in the Bronx. Police rushed him to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators are searching for three teenage suspects involved in the shooting. The teenager had recently moved from Ghana to the U.S. in October 2025 to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong, and pursue his education.
His father described him as clever and said he dreamed of becoming a physician. The elder Frimpong mentioned that his son had faced bullying at DreamYard Preparatory School, where two students were suspended, although police have not confirmed any link to the shooting.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reached out to the Frimpong family, offering condolences from Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama. He assured the family that the Ghanaian government would support them in seeking justice for their loss.
Ablakwa welcomed Trump’s intervention, stating that the Ghanaian government would cover the travel expenses for the mother, Doris Gyamfi, and assist with visa arrangements and funeral costs. Bronx Congressman Ritchie Torres also expressed sorrow, emphasizing that the community is mourning the loss of a young life with a bright future.
As the investigation continues, vigils have been held by Ghanaian residents and community leaders, all calling for justice for Javits Frimpong.
