Martha Stewart Apologizes for Halloween Costume Depicting Homelessness

Martha Stewart, the well-known American lifestyle entrepreneur and television personality, has apologized after receiving criticism for her Halloween costume. The 85-year-old shared a photo on Instagram on October 31, where she dressed as a homeless person, featuring torn jeans, a black hat, and makeup that made her look dirty. She held a sign that read, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

After posting the photo, Stewart faced backlash from social media users who accused her of trivializing homelessness and poverty. Following the criticism, she deleted the photo. Initially, Stewart claimed the costume was meant to raise awareness about homelessness, which she called one of America’s biggest challenges.

In a statement to Page Six, Stewart expressed distress over the offense caused by her costume. She said it was never her intention to upset anyone and emphasized her commitment to supporting charities that address homelessness.

Later, Stewart acknowledged that her first response was inadequate. In a follow-up Instagram post, she admitted, “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up.” She recognized that her costume was insensitive and apologized, saying, “I know many people are suffering economically.”

The controversy was heightened because the photo appeared next to promotional material for her QVC candle collection. Critics called the costume “grotesque” and “morally bankrupt,” questioning the appropriateness of using homelessness as a Halloween theme.

Stewart is a prominent figure in the lifestyle industry, having built a successful career through television, cookbooks, and home products. She has authored over 100 books and won several Daytime Emmy Awards.
