Flávio Bolsonaro Claims Leadership Role After Presidential Election Loss
Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has declared himself the “leader” of Brazil after losing the presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. He made this claim after arriving in Miami, United States, following his election defeat.
In a letter posted on X, Bolsonaro initially called himself the “elected president” but later changed it to “leader.” He expressed his sentiments to his supporters, stating, “I want to say, not only to my 60 million voters but also to the Brazilian people, that I am the leader.” He accused Lula and Brazil’s Supreme Court of being involved in electoral fraud, although he did not provide any evidence for these claims.
Brazil’s electoral authorities have confirmed Lula’s victory, and Bolsonaro’s party has also accepted the election results. Bolsonaro, who is a candidate for the upcoming presidential election in October 2026, arrived in Miami after traveling through Argentina and Ecuador.
His departure came after a court ordered him to surrender his passports due to a money-laundering investigation, which he denies. Bolsonaro rejected claims that he fled Brazil, stating, “I did not flee Brazil. I left Brazil, but I did not abandon the Brazilian people.” He also expressed gratitude to Argentine President Javier Milei and former US President Donald Trump for their support, although Trump has chosen not to engage in Brazil’s post-election issues.
