President Tinubu Seeks Over $20 Billion in Foreign Loans for Development Projects

In a recent update from Nigerian newspapers, President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate for approval to borrow over $20 billion and €1.04 billion. This money is intended to finance infrastructure and development projects across the country.

Alongside this, the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have reached an agreement to help workers facing economic challenges. This includes a ₦70,000 transport support and the payment of 19 months of back pay owed to health workers.

In other news, an independent committee has suggested that some officers from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) should be dismissed or face penalties. This follows the tragic deaths of 33 detainees in their custody in Niger State. The committee also recommended that N1.4 billion be paid as compensation to the victims and their families.

The Guardian newspaper highlighted concerns about Nigeria’s growing debt as President Tinubu seeks approval for these new loans. Critics are worried about the country’s ability to manage its debt, especially with limited savings available to pay off existing loans.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has urged his supporters to stop calling him their leader. He stated that after reconciling with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, he now considers himself a member of the Rainbow Coalition, which has a new leader.

Lastly, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State expressed his commitment to supporting President Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, despite public dissatisfaction over economic issues.
