Oluremi Tinubu Receives Prestigious Coral Beads from Oba of Benin

On October 15, 2026, Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, was honored with the prestigious ‘Ikele’ coral beads by the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II. This ceremony took place at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City during a visit from traditional rulers across Edo State.

Oluremi Tinubu is the first Nigerian First Lady to receive this honor, which symbolizes a warm welcome and appreciation for her support of the traditional institution. The Oba’s eldest daughter, Princess Ikuoyemwen Aimiuwu-Ewuare, read a message on behalf of the Oba, who prayed for wisdom and strength for President Bola Tinubu and other leaders.

During the event, the Oba emphasized his commitment to preserving Benin cultural heritage and promoting peace and unity among the people. He praised Oluremi Tinubu for her representation of Nigeria on the global stage, mentioning her recent recognition by former President Donald Trump.

In her remarks, Oluremi Tinubu expressed her happiness at receiving the honor and pledged to work with traditional institutions. She also announced plans to support rural women through her Renewed Hope Initiative, highlighting the government’s efforts to empower vulnerable groups.

Accompanying the First Lady were Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, and other first ladies from various states. With this decoration, Oluremi Tinubu becomes only the third prominent Nigerian woman to receive the Ikele beads, following Justice Esohe Ikponmwen and Pauline Igbanor.
