Kano State Orders Retired Civil Servants to Vacate Offices Immediately

The Kano State Government has announced that all civil servants who have retired, either by age or length of service, must leave their official roles right away. This directive was issued by Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, the Head of Civil Service, in a circular dated October 6, 2026.

The circular, titled “Unauthorised Continuance in Service After Statutory Retirement by Civil Servants in Ministries, Departments and Agencies of Government—Call for Immediate Handing Over of Official Documents and Properties,” highlights concerns about some officers remaining in their positions after reaching retirement age or completing their required service time.

According to the statement from the Director of Public Enlightenment, Rukayya Uba Sulaiman, the directive is effective immediately. It emphasizes that retired officers must stop all official duties and return any government documents, property, and responsibilities to their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

Hajiya Maimota also instructed various officials, including Accounting Officers and Permanent Secretaries, to ensure that this directive is followed strictly across all MDAs. The circular warns that anyone found supporting a retired civil servant’s continued service will face disciplinary action according to the Civil Service Rules.

The Office of the Head of Civil Service reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining discipline, professionalism, and accountability within the civil service.
