Activist Calls for Alternative Dispute Resolution to Foster Peace in Niger Delta

Chief Nengi James-Eriworio, a rights activist and chairman of the Nigeria Institute of Chartered Arbitrators in Bayelsa State, has highlighted the role of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in promoting peace and development in the Niger Delta. In his recent article, he argues that in a world facing rapid changes, including technological advancements and resource scarcity, conflicts are likely to arise, but they do not have to escalate into crises.

James-Eriworio points out that traditional practices of dialogue, mediation, and restorative justice among the Nembe and Ijaw people show that lasting solutions can be found through conversation rather than confrontation. He believes that ADR, which includes negotiation, mediation, conciliation, and arbitration, is essential for building a fair and peaceful society.

He explains the different components of ADR: negotiation involves sharing interests, mediation offers guided discussions, conciliation aims to heal divisions, and arbitration provides fair decisions from trusted experts. According to him, these methods are especially crucial in the Niger Delta, where disputes over resources and land often need quick resolution.

James-Eriworio warns that lengthy legal battles can hinder development and increase distrust among communities. Through the Nengi James Foundation and other initiatives, he has promoted timely resolutions while maintaining relationships among individuals and institutions.

He advocates for improved standards and training in ADR, better enforcement of mediated agreements, and increased involvement of women, youth, and rural communities. He stresses that ADR should be accessible to everyone, not just the privileged.
