President Tinubu Extends 2025 Budget Implementation Deadline to End of 2026
President Bola Tinubu has officially signed a new law that extends the deadline for implementing the 2025 budget. The new deadline is now December 31, 2026, instead of the previous date of September 30, 2026. This decision was announced by his media aide, Bayo Onanuga.
The amendment to the budget was approved by both the Senate and the House of Representatives on September 29, 2026. The extension is intended to give government agencies more time to finish ongoing projects and ensure that funds are used effectively for the benefit of Nigerians.
In his statement, President Tinubu praised the National Assembly for their quick action on the bill. He highlighted that this cooperation between the executive branch and the legislature is important for the country.
Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Leader, explained that the extension will help maintain economic activity and support local contractors. He emphasized that this change does not mean new projects will be added and that it aligns with existing financial rules.
This is the fourth time the 2025 budget has been extended. Initially, the budget was set to end in December 2025, but it has been pushed back several times, reflecting ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s budgeting process.
The House of Representatives also agreed to the new deadline, responding to a request from President Tinubu to allow more time for critical infrastructure projects and other spending plans outlined in the budget.
