NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja Passes Away at 60

The Nigerian labor movement has been thrown into mourning following the death of Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who passed away at the age of 60 after a protracted illness.

The solemn news was broken by NLC President Joe Ajaero to leaders of organized labor gathered for a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Enugu, following an official letter sent by the Ugboaja family. The announcement brought proceedings to a halt as union executives paid tribute to the late administrative chief.

Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja graduated with a law degree from the University of Calabar in 1987. After spending four years in private legal practice, he made a historic shift into trade unionism in 1993, earning recognition in NLC history as the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union. He rose through the ranks of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE) before joining the NLC secretariat, where he eventually emerged as General Secretary in August 2019.

As the chief administrator and operational engine room of the NLC, Ugboaja played a pivotal role in major national negotiations, including the implementation of national minimum wage policies and advocacy for economic relief for Nigerian workers. His contributions extended beyond traditional unionism to electoral reform advocacy with the Alliance for Credible Elections and participation as a delegate in both the 2005 and 2014 national constitutional conferences. Labour leaders across the country have described his passing as a monumental loss to Nigerian workers and the nation’s industrial relations landscape.
