How Nigerian Tech Founders Can Apply for ECOWAS $65,000 Startup Fund

Nigerian entrepreneurs and tech innovators have been handed a major boost as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) officially opens applications for the 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards.

The regional competition is offering a total cash prize pool of $65,000 to top-performing startups across West Africa, alongside mentorship, regional visibility, and direct access to international investors.

Under the prize structure announced by the ECOWAS Commission, the grand winner will walk away with $30,000, while the first and second runners-up will receive $20,000 and $15,000 respectively. Beyond the cash awards, selected startups will participate in a six-month post-award acceleration program, gain access to deal rooms with global venture capitalists, and receive digital tools, including computers and software packages.

The program aims to select 60 promising startups across 12 ECOWAS member states operating within six priority sectors: FinTech, EdTech and Skills Development, HealthTech, AgriTech and Food Systems, CleanTech and Green Innovation, and TravelTech.

To qualify for the grant, Nigerian founders must hold citizenship in an ECOWAS country, operate a business registered and based within the region, and have been in operation for at least two years with a working product and verifiable market traction.

Interested applicants are required to register an account on the official portal at ecowasstartupawards.ipawas.org and complete all sections of the application form before the August 31 deadline. Applicants must upload essential business documents, including the lead founder’s identity document, business registration certificate, two years of financial statements or projections, a 10-page business plan, a 10-slide pitch deck, and a one-minute video pitch.

Following the submission deadline, successful applicants will participate in virtual masterclasses in late September, culminating in a three-day physical summit and pitch competition in Abuja where regional finalists will present their innovations before an independent panel of industry judges.
