NTA and China Sign Massive Movie and Tech Deal to Swap TV Content

Nigeria and China have taken a major step toward deepening cultural ties following a landmark agreement between the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the China Movie Channel (CMC) to exchange film and television content.

The agreement was signed during the China–Nigeria Film and Literature Symposium held at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, drawing senior diplomats, federal officials, broadcasters, and prominent figures from both creative sectors.

Under the new partnership, both media organizations will collaborate on joint film co-productions, program exchanges, digital technology transfer, and professional capacity building for media practitioners. The deal is designed to give Nigerian creative talents greater international visibility while modernizing local broadcasting infrastructure.

Highlighting the economic and cultural strength of both nations, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai noted that China produces more than 700 feature films annually across 93,000 cinema screens, while Nigeria’s Nollywood remains a global powerhouse producing over 2,000 films each year. He added that the collaboration creates a vital platform for filmmakers and writers from both countries to share authentic national stories and strengthen mutual friendship.

Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy representatives welcomed the agreement, describing it as a timely booster for Nigeria’s economic diversification plans through the creative arts. They expressed appreciation for China’s continued commitment to international cultural exchanges that benefit both economies.

Echoing similar enthusiasm, NTA Director-General Salihu Abdulhamid Dembos declared the deal the beginning of an exciting new era for public broadcasting in Nigeria. He stressed that the partnership aligns directly with NTA’s ongoing digital upgrade and emphasized that both parties are focused on achieving measurable results, including high-quality joint productions and advanced training for young local creators.
