Media Legend and High Chief Oloye Lekan Alabi Laid to Rest as Tributes Pour In

The Nigerian media landscape and the traditional institution of Ibadanland have been thrown into mourning following the death and burial of veteran journalist, author, and high chief, Oloye Olalekan Alabi.

The former Chief Press Secretary to four consecutive governors of Oyo State passed away at the age of 76.

Following Islamic rites, his funeral ceremony commenced with Janazah prayers at his private residence in Akobo, Ibadan, led by the Chief Imam of Ibadanland. His remains were subsequently conveyed in a funeral procession to the Eternal Home Cemetery in Fiditi, Afijio Local Government Area, where family members, traditional leaders, media practitioners, and political associates gathered to pay their last respects.

Until his passing, Oloye Alabi held the prestigious traditional title of Abese Olubadan of Ibadanland and served as the Cultural Ambassador of the Source in Ile-Ife. He was widely celebrated for his lifelong dedication to promoting Yoruba cultural values, ethical broadcasting, and public communication.

In a national tribute, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu commiserated with the family of the deceased, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and the Oyo State Government over the significant loss.

“Oloye Alabi was a consummate journalist and public relations expert who had a distinguished public service career,” President Tinubu stated. “Besides being a veteran journalist and renowned public relations practitioner, he was also a cultural icon whose appearance, conduct, and character spoke volumes about his passion for culture and tradition.”

Dignitaries across various sectors continue to celebrate the legacy of the late chief, describing his contributions to public administration, broadcast journalism, and cultural preservation as a benchmark for future generations.
