LASTMA Operatives Pull Three Trapped Victims From Wreckage After Out-of-Control Truck Smashes Sienna and Keke in Lagos

A potentially fatal tragedy was averted along the busy LASU–Isheri corridor in Lagos after quick-thinking traffic officials pulled three severely injured commuters from a violent multi-vehicle collision caused by a heavy truck’s mechanical failure.

The horrific accident unfolded along the Iyana School axis, inward Igando, when a MACK flatbed heavy haulage truck suddenly lost its braking power while in motion. With the driver unable to control the heavy vehicle, the truck plowed directly into a Toyota Sienna passenger car before crushing two commercial tricycles (popularly known as Keke Napep) carrying commuters.

The violent impact reduced the smaller vehicles to twisted metal, trapping several occupants in the wreckage. Fortunately, a patrol team from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) stationed nearby witnessed the crash and instantly triggered an emergency rescue response.

Risking secondary collisions from oncoming traffic, LASTMA operatives expertly cut through the crumpled frames of the tricycles and the car to extricate three trapped victims—one male and two females—who sustained severe fracture injuries from the crushing force.

“Our patrol officers moved in without delay the moment the crash occurred, securing the scene and pulling the injured victims out before secondary crashes could happen,” stated LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq. “The three survivors suffered severe fractures and were immediately rushed to El-Shaddai Hospital for urgent medical care. Working alongside officers from the Iba Police Division, our men successfully cleared the damaged truck, Sienna, and tricycles off the main road to restore normal traffic flow.”

Commending the bravery and speed of the emergency responders, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki reiterated that many highway crashes across the metropolis are entirely preventable if heavy vehicle owners prioritize basic roadworthiness.

Bakare-Oki issued a firm directive to fleet operators and articulated truck drivers across Lagos State, warning that driving heavy vehicles with faulty braking mechanisms poses a massive threat to public safety. He urged transport unions to enforce rigorous pre-trip mechanical checks on all trucks before hitting major urban corridors.
